The Archbishop of Canterbury says the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK "seems unavoidable".
Courts are already running in some parts of England offering Muslims a chance to deal with divorce etc in sharia courts. Under this law, women are second to men and if this law eventually controlled uk, women may have to cover up. Do you feel we have lost our little country or do you feel this is fair?
As has been pointed out, Sharia can only be used as a dispute resolution mechanism in civil disagreements, and is only legally binding, as long as both parties have agreed in advance.
It is, in effect, allowing the Mosque elders to arbitrate on a civil dispute - no different to Beth Din, ACAS, or asking Granny to decide.
None of these methods have any place in our criminal law - nor should they.
I, like you, have concerns about the equal treatment of women in Sharia courts, and the degree to which Muslim women might feel pressured into using them. But the same idea could apply to any mechanism.
